the Tobori shishi netsuke sits on a triangular base. blackened engravings to the body and base. A finely carved Himotoshi which passes through the shishi's legs. Fine yellowish patina

* works of these triangular shapes were made from left over carvings from Japanese musical instruments. The factories in Japan which produced these musical instruments during the 18th c would sell the left over carvings ( usually in the shape of triangles) to netsuke carvers. hence this triangular shape
