RUSSIAN SOVIET ORIGINAL PROPAGANDA POSTER 1920
Rare, first edition, vintage original 1920 Soviet propaganda poster: "Who Lives in This Mansion?". Published by: State Publishing House GIZ, Moscow 1920. Artist: K. Spassky.
In the folk tale, "Teremok" [A Tiny Mansion], familiar since childhood to every Russian, one animal after another settles in a tiny old house; finally, a huge bear tries to squeeze in and brings down the whole structure. In the anonymous artist’s reinterpretation, "Teremok" and its inhabitants stand for the old regime; the Revolution brings an end to the cozy cohabitation of the moneyed classes of landlords and capitalists. Stylistically, the design appears to spoof the folk tale illustrations of the Mir Iskusstva artists.
