A PAIR OF SARI WARE STYLE POTTERY BOWLS
Northern Iran, Ca. AD 1000. A pair of sari ware bowls, each feature a buff earthenware body covered in creamy slip and decorated with bold, dark outlines filled with iron and manganese-based pigments, all beneath a transparent glaze. The bowl on the left is adorned with a repeating floral motif radiating from the center, rendered in a restrained palette of red, black, and brown, with paired dot-and-stem elements evoking stylised blossoms. Small roundels interspersed between the petals add rhythm to the composition. The uneven rim and surface restoration indicate use and burial wear, common in excavated examples from the region. The bowl on the right presents a more complex, interlaced geometric design, featuring triangular panels filled with vegetal scrolls, linked by broad bands suggestive of woven or plaited ornamentation. The use of strong black contours and dynamic negative space is characteristic of Sari slipware, aligning with broader Islamic aesthetic principles of abstraction and repetition.Size: 185-210mm x 70-85mm; Weight: 960gProvenance: Previous property of a UK based Islamic art professional.
