VENETIAN FOUNDRY, XVI-XVII CENTURY
Fleeing Satyr (Marsyas?)
Coated bronze with jasper base. 23 x 8, 5 x 7,5 cm with base; 16,5 x 8,5 x 7,5 cm without
A bronze statuette depicting an uncommon and rather intriguing subject. Due to the material used and the coating, this item is likely to be from the Padua-Venice area and probably dates to the late Renaissance period.
A similar-looking specimen was shown at Cambi Auctions (Genoa) displaying a similar torsion of the torso, but tied to a tree trunk, hence the possible connection to Marsyas.
