Mutariri/Guardian II By Peter Musami original work created in 2021 Oils & Ink on Paper Artwork
SHIPS FROM Harare, Zimbabwe This work celebrates the togetherness of flesh and spirit, (In Shona culture it is believed that the spirit of the departed lives amongst the living, to guide and protect). The use of red thread resonate with the entanglements of alien cultures on Shona culture and it's conservation. The punctuations in this work converse on effects of colonialism in Zimbabwe. The cultural and racial genocide that transpired during colonial times has manifested in identity crisis creating a wedge between tradition and contemporary culture. ARTIST BIO Musami?s work focuses on healing and restoration as it is experienced through the gender divide. The process which he uses to create the work act as symbolic gestures in how he explores notions of healing and restoration. The physical act of tearing, cutting and destroying and then mending, repairing and fixing are expressed in the final outcome of the work. Musami?s work is in private collections and has been exhibited over the years in various solo and group exhibitions in Harare, Johannesburg, Cape Town, United Kingdom, Canada, Switzerland.
