As a child, he painted with his uncle, and his interested in painting has since never ceased. He studied for five years at the School of Applied Arts in Paris, specializing in painting: murals, fresco, and canvases; mosaic works, stained glass, and tapestry weaving. Thereafter, Gaveau continued his formal training in art by attending the National Superior School of Les Beaux Arts in Paris. Gaveau was greatly inspired by the French painters Cezanne, Braque, Duffy, and Leger. His own work was recognized in 1963, when he was awarded a prize and scholarship from the Antwerp Academy, enabling him to study Flemish painting in Brussels.
