Arthur Diehl Signed Oil Painting of Venetian Canal Scene, 1921. Arthur Diehl was born in England in 1870, to a novelist mother and a father who was the director of an opera company. He left his studies at Oxford University at the age of nineteen to travel the Continent, staying in Milan for a brief period to study painting. He had a work accepted for exhibit at the Royal Academy in London in 1889, and by 1891 had left for the United States. There he survived through a series of odd artistic jobs, including as the painter of snuff boxes. He eventually found his way to Provincetown, Massachusetts where he would spend summers in his studio, quickly painting small works for the tourists as he entertained them with his stories, selling directly rather than through a gallery or dealer. He continued this practice in Florida during the winters and in various locations throughout the Northeast as a means to support his family until his popularity and prices escalated . 34.5" W x 24.0" H x 2.0" D measures frame; visible image measures 27" W x 16" H. in good condition overall
