Pair of Evolution Pieces, On The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin and The Evolution of Man Vol. II by Ernest Haeckel Books

Special Box-Covered Edition, with illustrations. On the Origin of Speccies by Means of Natural Selection or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life, by Charles Darwin. With a New Preface by Charles G. Darwin, Illustrated with Wood Engravings by Paul Landacre. Published by the Heritage Press, New York, 1963.

This hardcover piece is bound in partial dark green leather and a lighter green board. The board is etched with gold designs depicting one of Darwin's original drawings. The spine shares the same golden etching as well as the book's title and author information. It is accompanied by a board box that exposes the spine to read while keeping the book protected during storage. The book is in excellent condition with no signs of wear in any capacity. The original owner's ex libris sticker is present on the first blank page of the book. There is also a removable leaflet from The Heritage Club entitled Sanglass that was likely left by the original owner between the pages. The book measures H 10.5 W 7.25 D 1.5 inches. The board box cover measures H1 0.75 W 7.75 D 1.75 inches. The box cover shows some discoloration and signs of use. No odor was detected from either piece.

Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) was a British scientist and naturalist who is best known for his theory of evolution by natural selection. He is primarily known as the architect of the theory of evolution by natural selection. With the publication of On the Origin of Species in 1859, he advanced a view of the development of life on Earth that profoundly shaped nearly all biological and philosophical thought that followed.

Authorized Edition of The Evolution of Man: A Popular Exposition of the Principle Points of Human Ontogeny and Phylogeny. From the German of Ernst Haeckel, Professor in the University of Jena, Author of The History of Creation, etc. Volume 2. Published by D. Appleton and Company in New York at 72 Fifth Avenue, 1897.

This hardcover piece is half bound in half leather and marbled boards. The front and back covers have signs of wear. The corners of them are fraying and show loss to the leather. The leather is missing and some fallout to the spine of the book, and the binding will need repair. The back cover is attached to the book only by the glued paper and will need mending to the binding itself. The pages show signs of finger use but are all present and unmarked with various black-and-white original illustrations in drawing form. The top paper edges are gold-lined. No odor was detected. It measures H 8 W 5.75 D 1.25 inches.

Ernst Haeckel (German, 1834-1919) was a biologist and philosopher who was an early exponent of Darwinism in Germany. Although many of his conclusions have been proven erroneous, they attracted a large following and stimulated extensive research in the field.
