Alberto Giacometti & Tahar Ben Jelloun. Flohic Editions, , Paris, 1991. First Edition

4to. Illustrated white glossy wraps dust jacket and printed wraps. Copiously illustrated in colour throughout.  Pages: 80

ALBERTO GIACOMETTI Giacometti never ceased to sculpt solitude. Each of his creatures is a light residue on a heavy plinth. Something stops it flying away. Something holds it back, making it the witness not of a life, but of eternity. And all those objects, all those beings are reminders of absence. Infinite time has worked upon the clay. It makes one feel so small and so close to that human lassitude of things. Those in- visible faces belong to stooping bodies moving through the night that is buried within us. They are made in the sketch of light. The gestures of uncertainty and hesitation become painting. The portraits are a pause in the respect of dust, be- tween bronze and plaster, a brief moment when colors invade the body to deny anguish and to scoff at death.

TAHAR BEN JELLOUN Born Fez, Morocco, 1944. Lives Paris and Tangiers. Has published four collections of poetry, including The Almond Trees died of their wounds; seven novels, including L'Enfant de sable (English translation, The Sand Child), The Sacred Night (Prix Goncourt 1987, English translation, The Sacred Night) and Les Yeux lowers; two short stories and two essays. Discovered Giacometti through Jean Genet.
