The Israelite Settlement is one of the most intriguing processes in the history of Israel. Biblical and archaeological research has been wrestling since the 1920s with the enigma of the Settlement, unable to provide clear answers to the two main questions: the origins of the settlers and the nature of the Settlement process. The last two decades have seen an impressive breakthrough in the archaeological research of the period. Small sites in the central hill country, the heart of the Settlement area, have been excavated with advanced methods, while comprehensive modern surveys have been undertaken. These projects provide, for the first time, a reliable picture of material culture and settlement patterns. The four parts of this book deal with the results of excavations and surveys and of the Land of Ephraim regional project, the material culture of the Settlement period and the nature of the Settlement process from chronological, demographic and historical perspectives.
