Travels in Yemen : an account of Joseph Halevy's journey to Najran in the year 1870 written in San'ani Arabic by his guide Hayyim Habshush. Edited with a detailed summary in English and a glossary of vernacular words by S. D. Goitein. Hebrew University Press 1941
This RARE travel book by the Yemenite called Habshush is a critical edition of the original Judeo-Arabic text of his "Travels in Yemen", a synopsis of the whole in English and a glossary by the renowned Arabist Shelomo Dov Goitein (1900-1985), a German-Jewish ethnographer and historian known for his research on Jewish life in the Islamic Middle Ages, and especially for his research of the Cairo Geniza documents. Goitein was appointed Professor of Islamic History and Islamic Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1928 and in 1957 moved to Philadelphia and worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton University.
This extremely rare critical edition of a valuable contribution to our knowledge of North-Eastern Yemen, of great interest to Arabists and ethnographers
