The Saving of the Community of Fossano, Italy from a Pogrom, with a Poem of Gratitude to be Said on the Day the Miracle Happened - an Original Description Handwritten by Its Author - Italy 1796 - Extremely Rare
A description of the miraculous saving of the Jewish community of Fossano, Italy in 1796.
A touching letter poetically describing the story. With a special poem commemorating the miracle written by the rabbi of the community, Rabbi Avraham (his name is indicated by the large letters at the end of the verses of the poem).
When the French fought the Austrian army in Italy, the French army, commanded by Napoleon, besieged the city of Fossano. The Christian residents of the town, taking advantage of the situation, broke into the Jewish ghetto and looted Jewish possessions. The Jews fled to the local synagogue and tried to summon the authorities. These attempts failed due to the French siege on the town. The rioters meanwhile succeeded in breaking through the gates of the synagogue and started ascending its steps to kill the Jews who were hiding there. At the crucial moment, the French fired a single shell to the entrance of the synagogue, which hit the wall of the staircase, rocking the complete ghetto. The rioters became frightened and fled, throwing their loot behind them. The Jews were miraculously saved.
The rabbi of the community wrote the poem, made of 36 rhymed verses, in memory of this miracle.
And the community "made a commitment to celebrate this day and say this prayer on the fourth day of Passover year after year".
The manuscript before us was written by the writer of the prayer, as indicated by the signature that begins with "Avraham" [the rest of the signature is lacking due to a tear] and most likely sent by him.
Before us is the original copy of the story and the prayer! At its end, an inscription in a foreign language and a signature. On the reverse side, the addressee's address, which is also cut off. Italian script.

The prayer was printed in several limited copies for the members of the community only. The booklet which was titled "Zeh Sefer Shevach Ve'Zimra…" was printed in Fossano, most likely in 1796 and is referred to by Davidson (Otzar Ha'Shira Ve'Ha'Piyut 227). Extremely rare.
This item is important for three reasons:
A. It is extremely rare to find an authentic description of a miracle, which was celebrated as a Jewish festival such as this "Purim De'Foassano"!
B. Especially when it is handwritten by the author! [The writer of the poem].
Condition: Good. The left corner of the leaf is scorched with damage to the letters at the end of the lines. on the second leaf, omission due to a tear. The omission is of the inscription on the foreign language that appears after the poem. Wear and tear.
