Kur Ha'Bchinah Responsa, Manuscript by Its Author Rabbi Yosef Shmuel Landau of Kempen, the Friend of the Chatam Sofer - Circa 1820
Four leaves (eight handwritten pages) with long passages from the book "Kur Ha'Bchinah" by Rabbi Yosef Shmuel Landau of Kempen. Most likely in the author's handwriting. The manuscript contains Talmudic novellae and halachic responsa.
The leaves are written in tiny, orderly script, approximately eighty lines on each page. Upon inspection of the manuscript, we found slight, yet significant, lingual variations in comparison to the printed version of the book (attached are photocopies of the book in which several of the variations are marked). Thus, we can conclude that this is a manuscript by the author, which was prepared for printing before 1831.
The book "Kur Ha'Bchinah" contains twenty five responsum which he sent to the most prominent contemporary rabbis and three sermons from his book "Mishkan Shiloh". The author prepared it for printing in 1831 and received the approbation of his friend the Chatam Sofer, who praises the author elaborately. Rabbi Akiva Eiger also approbated the book. For various reasons, the printing of the book delayed. The author died in 1837, at the young age thirty seven. The book was printed that same year, after his death, by his son-in-law, with the aforementioned approbations.
Rabbi Yosef Shmuel Landua (1800-1837), a well-known genius, the son of Rabbi Yisrael Yonah Landau author of "Ma'on Ha'Berachot". When his father died in 1824, Rabbi Shmuel Yosef was appointed the rabbi of the town, despite being only twenty four years old. The appointment was supported by Rabbi Akiva Eiger. In addition, Rabbi Shmuel Yosef served as head of the yeshiva of the town. He corresponded with the most prominent contemporary rabbis, who valued his personality and Torah greatness.
Rabbi Landau was known for his struggle against the Reforms, within whose framework he wrote an important composition that merited tremendous publication (was printed in the book "Mishkan Shiloh" in 1837 and again in 1929). He left behind him many manuscripts that have never been printed.

Condition: Good. Slight wear and tear, especially on the margins of the leaves, some of them restored with old scotch tape, slightly covering the text. The text is almost completely readable. Time stains.
