Responsa Shaagat Aryeh – Frankfurt an der Oder, 1756 – First Edition – With Rare Leaves
Responsa Shaagat Aryeh, halachic studies on Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim, by R. Aryeh Leib Ginsburg, Rabbi of Metz. Frankfurt an der Oder: Grila, [1756]. First edition.
The first book of the Shaagat Aryeh, through which he became renowned for his brilliance. The book was widely accepted throughout the Jewish world, reaching the community of Metz, who subsequently invited him to succeed R. Yehonatan Eibeshitz in his rabbinical post.
Reputedly, the author of Shaagat Aryeh was extremely poor, and due to a shortage of paper, the first edition of Shaagat Aryeh was written almost completely in acronyms.
Many stamps of the Kinyan Sefarim society of Halmeu.
Signature on endpaper: "Eliyahu Klein of here, Halmeu" [R. Eliyahu Klein, Rabbi of Halmeu, son of R. Shmuel Shmelke of Selish (Vynohradiv); 1852-1928]. Another signature (written and erased with pencil): "Avraham Meir HaKohen Glanzer of Grosswardein [Oradea]".
Ownership inscription on title page: "Belongs to the son-in-law of R. Mordechai".
Stamp on title page: "Deutsch Samuila, Primrabin Satu-Mare" ["Shmuel Deutsch, Chief Rabbi of Satmar"; we do not know who exactly is referred to].
[1], 93 leaves. 32.5 cm. Dark leaves. Fair-good condition. Stains, including dampstains. Worming, affecting text. Close trimming, affecting text in several places. Old binding, somewhat worn (spine damaged).
Includes four final leaves (90-93), which were added after the printing of the book was completed, and do not appear in many copies. This copy is lacking the list of printers, present in most copies on the final page (89b).
