The First Edition of the Zohar (Mantova, 1558) with Ancient Glosses – Contains a Handwritten Description of a Mysterious Dream from almost 400 Years Ago
Sefer Ha'Zohar by Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai [Mantova, 1558. First edition. Three lacking sections: Bereshit, Vayikra and Bamidbar.
Bereshit: leaves 26-181 [originally 251 leaves]. Ancient binding with a golden impression of the words "Mi'Beit ha'Zachar[?]".
Dozens of corrections and short glosses on the margins of the leaves, by different writers.
On leaf 88b, an interesting gloss in ancient script from 1645 where the writer recalls a special dream he had dreamt: "I was walking and saw a well … and I saw a man and he told me come with me and I will tell you a great secret. I followed him to a very large house. He told me: you should know that Yitzchak will add to Ya'akov's name the name of God and Ya'akov will add to Yosef's name the name of God and he told me this secret … and the house of Ya'akov shall be fire and the house of Yosef flame…"
Condition: Fair. Varying moth signs on the leaves. Typical wear and tear. Detached leaves. Some of the missing leaves have been completed by ancient Yemen script. It is possible that several additional leaves are missing.
Vayikra: Leaves 47-96 [originally 115 leaves].
Bamidbar: [1] 118-155 [originally the book ends with leaf 300]. Several leaves have been completed by ancient script.
This edition was printed after ninety years of which the rabbis forbade to print the book. During its printing, the printers of Cremona had also started printing the Zohar and the final sections of the book were printed in Cremona before they were printed in Mantova.
Condition: Good-Bad. Tears and stains. Wear. Detached leaves. It is possible that additional leaves are missing.
