Collection of Letters Telling the Story of the Mythological Hebrew Bookshop "Yarden" - the Center of the Cultural Life of the Jews of Essen, Germany - which was Completely Destroyed in Kristallnacht - the Activity of the Shop, Its Owner's Life, Correspondence with the Printing Press of Vilnius and More - an Interesting Story about an Important Community with a Tragic End
The mythological bookshop "Yarden" was located on 6 Tower Street of Essen. The bookshop was founded in 1923 by Shmuel Brener of Poland. It was located in the center of the old city of Yessen, in an area with many Jews. The shop served as an important meeting place for the members of the Jewish community, especially the "Aust Juden" - the Jews from Eastern Europe who lived in Essen.
There in the shop, they met, held conversations, shared experiences and of course, enjoyed the books. The book had many Hebrew books, religious and non-religious.
The bookshop corresponded with the well-known Lithuanian printing house "Rosenkratz and Schriptzer", the second in importance after the Rom printing house.
Rabbi Shmuel Brener was an orthodox Jew, book-lover, intellectual and Zionist. He immigrated to the Land of Israel and settled in Petach Tikvah, leaving the shop to Moritz Klinger. Moritz was deported to Poland by the Nazis, since he too was an Aust-Juden - an Eastern-Europe Jew.
During Kristallnacht, the shop was destroyed and looted by the Nazis.
Before us is a collection of 26 postcards that were sent by mail by the "Yarden" bookshop, the Rosenkratz and Schriptzer printing house, and by other people who corresponded with the shop, postcards that were sent to Shmuel Brener and more. Among others, there is an old postcard that was sent to Shmuel by 'Ha'Mizrachi'. Another postcard has a stamp of Rabbi Shmuel Mohilever, a stamp of the JNF.
The postcards are written in German, Yiddish and Hebrew. Interesting content.
