HISTORY - SCHINER, Mathieu (Muelebach, 1465 - Rome, 1522) - Switzerland
Letter dated Papie die 25 Oct[obre]s 1513 [Pavia, 25.10.1513] by Girolamo Morone (Milan, 1470 - ib., 1529) to Cardinal Mathieu Schiner. The document frames Morone with one of his most important interlocutors and also the one he was closest to: Cardinal Mathieu Schiner, bishop of Sion and a crucial figure in the relations between the Lombard state and Switzerland. More precisely, Morone says that he had taken refuge in Pavia because of the plague that struck Milan and that he was waiting there for the cardinal with the delegates and the speakers of the Helvetic confederation. The letter is thus part of a very dynamic period in the political life of the Sforza, so much so that a year later (July 1514), the Swiss representatives will ask for a purge of pro-imperial elements in the magistracy, favoring the appointment of Morone as state curator. The letter, in excellent condition, is written in precise and clear chancery script, with clear and traditional abbreviations. We quote the complete text: Car[dina]li Sedunensis. Reverendissime in Christo pater et illustrissimo domino tanquam pater honorando.
