Rabbi Shmuel Heller was a student of Rabbi Avraham Dov of Avritch and eventually replaced him as the leading rabbi of Safed. He was renown as a doctor and healer and was respected by both Jews and Arabs alike. Shmuel Horowitz a famous Breslov Chasid was a descendant of his. He is buried in the Tzfat Cemetery behind the kever of the holy Ari.
RABBI SHMUEL SALANT (1816– 1909) was a renowned Talmudist and Torah scholar who followed the customs of the Gaon of Vilna. From 1841 until his passing in 1909 he served as the Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem.
