Circus Mechanical Bank
Made by Shepard Hardware. Buffalo, New York - Circa 1890. From the John Meyer Collection. The Circus Bank is from Shepard Hardware's Excelsior Series. Finding a Circus Bank in superlative condition like this beauty is a very rare and unusual occurrence. Because the surface areas are largely broad and flat, and because the action of this bank is so vigorous, the Circus Bank is typically found in only poor to fair condition. When the crank is turned, we watch a clown and his pony circle the sawdust of the center ring. With each turn around the ring, the pony gallops up and down three times. As the clown approaches the penny, he raises his left arm and knocks the coin in the bank. Once past the deposit slot, his arm snaps back down. This particular Circus Bank comes from the celebrated collection of John Meyer. He was an early pioneering hobbyist who also wrote extensively about mechanical toy banks.
Condition: Pristine Plus Condition with Original Box.
