PAIR OF JAPANESE IMARI SQUARE PLATES
A pair of fine quality antique hand painted Japanese Imari square plates. They have a shaped scalloped edge with quality hand painted panels, with a vase of flowers and leaves to the centre, in wonderful red, blue, gold, orange and white colors, circa 1900. Imari porcelain can be Chinese or European in origin, but was first created in Japan. In 1616, the town of Arita became Japan's porcelain production center because it was near Izumiyama, a quarry rich in kaolin clay. The wares were then shipped to the West from the port of Imari, hence the name. Each plate measures 10.25'' H x 10.25'' W.
