Two items from the first factory in Jerusalem: a postcard with a picture of the factory workers, and soap produced in the factory – the beginning of the 20th century – historical items – extremely rare
The first settlement point outside the walls of the old city of Jerusalem, which was built for Jews by Jews, was "Finn House". The history of the house is connected to the activities and character of the British Consul James Finn. He and his wife established a multi-dimensional economic enterprise, which they called "moshevet hachoroshet for the employment of the Jews of Jerusalem". The Jews called the place "Abraham's Vineyard". To a certain extent this "moshava" can be considered the first factory in re-built Jerusalem.
It was from this territory that stones were quarried in 1860 in order to build the big synagogue in the Old City of Jerusalem, which is known as "the Hurva of Rabbi Yehuda the Chasid". The "Firman" to renew this synagogue from the depth of its ruins was attained through the efforts of Consul Finn, who was invited to take part in the inauguration ceremony.
The Moshava was active for several decades. In this framework Mrs. Finn established a soap factory on the site (lye). This was a building with three rooms. In approximately 1915, with the outbreak of the First World War, the factory was closed.
The soap was of a high kosher status, and was sent to London to win rich Englishmen over the idea of the love of the Land. The soaps were sold at an exceptionally high price. These soaps were not used by the residents of Jerusalem.
We have before us two rare items from the factory "Abraham's Vineyard" from the beginning of the twentieth century:
a. A postcard with a very rare picture, in which we see Jews (from different racial backgrounds) working to build the road to Moshevet Hacharoshet. In the forefront of the picture is a Jew with a black beard, seemingly the manager of the factory. Under the picture is written: Abraham's vineyard – Jews making road (additional writing was cut through when the postcard was cut).
Size:12*8 cm.
b. Soap produced in the factory in "Abraham's Vineyard". On the soap there is prominent writing "Abraham's Vineyard Jerusalem".
Size: 7*5 cm.
Extremely rare! Possibly the only soap from this factory which still exists.
Condition: very good.
