Collection of about 50 Letters and Postcards, most of them sent to Dr. Elyakum Heinrich Loewe, one of the First Librarians in Israel – One of the Letters is Addressed to Gershom Shalom, one of the Greatest Jewish Kabbala Researchers – Most of the Letters were sent from Germany, the Thirties – German and Hebrew
Dozens of letters and postcards. Many of them from the Nazi rule in Germany.
The letters deal with books and librarianship. They also express the horrors of the time and the Jews' hope for redemption: "it is time, the time for redemption, to fulfill the dreams of previous generations and build the ruins of Judah and Jerusalem", "sending regards and Ketiva Ve'Chatima Tova … to all those helping in the building of the country".
Elyakum Heinrich Loewe (1896-1951) was a Jewish-German journalist, linguist, expert in Middle Eastern affairs, philosopher and librarian. He was one of the leaders of the Zionist movement in Germany and one of the first librarians in Israel. In 1933, he immigrated with his family to Israel and was appointed the director of the municipal library "Sha'ar Zion" in Tel Aviv, apposition he held until 1948.
For a more detailed description of some of the letters, see Hebrew description.
Condition: Most letters are in very good condition. Some are with light stains, filing holes and folding marks.
