THOMAS J. JACKSON AND WILLIAM DORSEY PENDER
A pair of especially rare war-date signed endorsements on the same piece, those of Lieutenant Gen. THOMAS J. 'STONEWALL' JACKSON (1824-1863) and WILLIAM DORSEY PENDER (1834-1863), both generals dying in combat within two months of each other in the same year this piece was signed. Offered is a panel (only) from a military document referencing a deserter, bearing a signed endorsement at top by Pender, 'Hd. Qrs. A. P. Hill's [?] Div.', Feb. 14, 1863', forwarding the document approved, followed by that of Jackson, 'Hd Qrs. 2nd Army Corps', Feb. 14, 1863, taking the same action. Jackson signs 'T. J. Jackson Lt. Genl' Finally there appears the signed endorsement of AAG Col. WALTER H. TAYLOR, staff officer to Gen. Robert E. Lee, who replies for Lee who has approved the request. Some staining as shown but all signatures remain strong and clear. Jackson was killed in an accidental shooting following Chancellorsville, Pender was mortally wounded by a shell fragment on the second day of Gettysburg.
