LEONIDAS POLK. THOMAS C. HINDMAN AND ZACHARIAH DEAS
A rare combination of war-date endorsements on a single piece. On Aug. 18, 1863 a Pvt. E. J. Johnson of the 50th Alabama requests a 24 hour pass to visit his brother, a member of the 9th Alabama Battalion who he has not seen. At bottom, the request is first approved by A.A.G. Col. GEORGE W. H. BRENT (1821-1872). On the verso, the request then bears a (somewhat faded) A.E.S. of Brigadier Gen. ZACHARIAH DEAS (1819-1882), followed by signed endorsements of Brigadier Gen. THOMAS C. HINDMAN (1828-1868) and Lieut. Gen. LEONIDAS POLK (1806-1864), all of whom approve the man's request for leave. Some show-through, else very good. It's no surprise that the private was granted a pass - the 50th was badly cut-up by war's end, and few survived until the surrender.
