ARCHIBALD GRACIE, JR.
(1832 - 1864) Confederate brigadier general, took an active role during the Battle of Chickamauga, where he lost over 700 men. Wounded at Bean's Station, he later fought at Petersburg. While looking out at the Union lines through his telescope, an artillery shell exploded in front of him breaking his neck and killing him. Rare war-date signed endorsement 'A. Gracie' as brigadier general on a 3 x 3 in. section cut from a larger document, 'Hd.Qrs. Gracie's Brig.', Apr. 23, 1864, in full: 'Approved & respectfully forwarded, attention called to remarks of Company Commander'. Very good.
