CHARLES SIDNEY WINDER
(1829 - 1862) Confederate brigadier general, assigned to the Shenandoah Valley under Stonewall Jackson to command Garnett's brigade. At Cedar Mountain, on the left flank of the Confederate line, Winder was personally directing the fire of a battery when a Union shell struck him in his left side, horribly mangling and mortally wounding him. Very rare antebellum signature: 'Charles S. Winder Capt. 9th Infy' on a 3.25 x 1 in. slip, mounted. A clean split crosses the 'C' in his signature, else fine.
