GEORGE G. MEADE
(1815 - 1872) Union major general who commanded brilliantly at Gettysburg, leading to a Union victory and the turning point of the Civil War. A.L.S. 'Geo. G. Meade Maj. Genl. U.S.A.' on 'Headquarters, Third Military District' letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Atlanta, Feb. 12, 1868 to Gen. Thomas H. Ruger in Milledgeville, Ga. Meade discusses a proposed tax to defray the cost of the constitutional convention being held in Milledgeville. He notes: '...this ordinance has not yet been officialy presented to me & before taking action I desire your views - as to the practicality of collecting the special tax within the period designated...whether that short time will interfere with the collection of revenue on which you depend...' Very good, with a copy of the printed ordinance as issued by Ruger and a clipping of the text from a Georgia newspaper.
