GOUVERNEUR K. WARREN
(1830-1882) American Civil War Union General best remembered for his defense of Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. Fine war-date A.L.S. on 5th Regiment of New York letterhead, 1p. 4to., Baltimore, Nov. 12, 1861, to a Gen. Thomas Hillhouse, in part: '…I have the honor to request that my commission as Colonel of the Regiment be made to date from the 31st of August to the date of Gen. Durkee's promotion. This is the invariable rule in the U.S. Army and it is a matter of much importance to me as the number of regiments being raised in the different states makes the difference even of a day or a matter of moment...' Small tear on the right of one crease fold, else fine condition.
