GUSTAVUS W. SMITH
(1819 - 1895) Major General of the Army of Northern Virginia before Robert E. Lee took over, and interim Secretary of War for the Confederacy. A.L.S., 4pp., 8vo., New York, NY. Jan. 18, 1895 to THOMAS JORDAN (1819-1895), Confederate general and major operative in the network of Confederate spies. In part: '...Yours in reference to Rolfe's account of the sagacity of General J.E. Johnston.... The proposition came from General Beauregard and was from the first fully concerned in by me. General Johnston acquiesced...In that discussion thus began, General Johnston will not take a leading part in preserving the matter from President Davis. I am sorry to hear that you are on the sick list and by no means improving...I will try to see you sometime next week...' Jordan would die a few months later. Fine condition.
