A letter from Rabbi Simcha Kufstein of Budapest. Budapest, 1899.
A family letter with Torah thoughts which he sent to his son Rabbi Mordechai. In part of the letter the Rabbi discusses the old cemetery in his city, whether it is permitted to sell it and to save it from disgrace: "Last week my friend Rabbi Falk sent me the question about the tombstones in the old cemetery, whose number is close to six thousand two hundred, if it is permitted to sell them so that they will not be greatly disgraced, and I brought him proofs to permit it and he sent this question along with my poor opinion to the prince of Torah Rabbi Yitzchak Shmelkish, author of the responsa Beit Yitzchak, Av Beit Din of Lvov and its environs, and we will wait for his lofty response to see who is correct…".
At the end of the letter is his signature: "The small one, Simcha".
In Krisztinavros, one of the quarters of modern day Budapest, was a Jewish cemetery, which was revealed during construction work which was carried out on the site in 1894. This letter sheds lights on the efforts made by the Rabbis of Hungary to sell the site, apparently to a third party, and in this way to save the cemetery from complete destruction.
Rabbi Simcha Kufstein, a Dayan in Budapest, Rabbi and Av Beit Din of three Hungarian congregations. Wrote comments and translated the book "Shirat Adon" (Budapest, 1873). His comments in the page's margins are full of tremendous knowledge of Bible, Talmud and Midrashim.
Leaf written on both sides. 14x22 cm.
