A Letter of Thanks from the Managers of the "Misgav La'Dach" Hospital - Jerusalem, 1894 - Signatures of the Rabbis of Jerusalem
A letter of thanks for a donation of 5 rubles, from the ancient hospital "Misgav La'Dach" to Mr. Yosef Nechuktin.
"5 rubles which you donated to the general hospital 'Misgav La'Dach', the holy temple for saving the lives and souls of the miserable Jewish sick…".
Written in Latin handwriting, with the signatures of the directors, the Rabbis of Jerusalem: Rabbi "Gavriel Shabtai S.T.", Rabbi "Chisdai Alshich S.T", "the agent" Menachem HaCohen. With the stamp of Rabbi Menachem Shem Tov HaCohen and the hospital stamp.

The "Misgav La'Dach" hospital was established by the Sephardi community in the middle of the 19th century in the old city of Jerusalem. The hospital's first building was built in 1854 with money donated by the children of Meir-Anschel, the patriach of the Rothschild family, and was first known by the name "The Rothschild Hospital". In 1889 its name was changed to "Misgav La'Dach". The hospital provided health services to the residents of the Jewish Quarter, most of whom lacked means and were supported by the "Chaluka" money. The society was financed by money from the rich members of the Salonika congregation.

Rabbi Menachem ben Rabbi Shem Tov HaCohen (died in 1911) was born in Salonika and immigrated to Israel at a young age. He studied Torah from the scholars of Jerusalem. He had a yeshiva in his house in Jerusalem and dedicated much of his time to the Jewish and Sephardi institutions in Jerusalem. He was among the founders of the hospital and was its agent for 20 years. He collected his many sermons in a book which is still in manuscript form. On a plaque which was erected in his memory is written, among other things: "In eternal memory of the wonderful Rabbi the pious one of the priests…a scholar who was great in Torah, a righteous man, pious and humble…".
Rabbi Gavriel Shabtai, a Dayan in the Sephardi Beit Din of Jerusalem, the brother of Rabbi Chizkiya Shabtai (about whom is written "who does kindness with his Creator"), signed on approbations and decrees along with the Rabbis of Jerusalem. One of the disciples of the "Beit El" study hall. Known as one of the great Rabbis of his generation. His halachic responsa were printed in the books of Rabbis of his generation.
Rabbi Chisdai Alshich (died in 1897), the grandson of Rabbi Menachem Alshich, one of the great Rabbis of Salonika. Settled in Jerusalem.
