OLIVIER LAURENCE: (1907-1989) English actor, Academy Award winner. A good A.L.S., Larry, four pages,

OLIVIER LAURENCE: (1907-1989) English actor, Academy Award winner. A good A.L.S., Larry, four pages, 8vo, Brighton, Sussex, 'Mon. 5th or 4th or something Sept' n.y. (1966), to 'Darling Angel Girl' (Madeline Sherwood). Olivier thanks his correspondent for their angelic letter and clipping and continues 'Joanie is making a v slow, but thank God sure recovery. The little one acts like it had had Joanie, if you know what I mean & had thought but nothing of it. Actually it was quite a tussle pulling the little thing through. But she's marvellous now, & as I say Joanie is really beginning to perk up, so all on that old horizon begins to take on a shiny sweet glow again. The little one had to be called Julia, on account of (after three days of labour) having to be a Caesarean - a built of a built in joke that I suppose (like on the inside of Doug Fairbanks Jnr's lavatory seats) but what can you think of when you're trying to run a National (classical) Theatre?'. Olivier further thanks Sherwood for her news regarding Garson Kanin and Ruth Gordon and expresses his disappointment that they won't be travelling to England ('there's nothing like a European visit that a good script at home won't cure') and also writes 'Darling One. I wish I could tell you how much I love to hear from you. I get so boiled up in this job, my brain feels fried most of the time (lot of culinary analogues but you know what I mean) even if I don't write back much, it really does do me good to hear from you my love, it truly does. My loving homage to the Olympians - me I'm only a Spartan - if that'. A letter of unusually personal content. VG
