Issues of "Al HaSaf" - Entire Set - Cyprus, 1948-1949
"Al HaSaf" [On the Verge], weekly magazine of students and graduates of the Pinhas Rutenberg JDC Seminary for Guides in Cyprus. Cyprus, 1948-1949. Issues 1-25 (no more issues were printed).
The issues contain much information on life in the camps, articles on current events, reports on events in Palestine and literary and cultural items reflecting the spiritual life in the camps. Numerous illustrations in the issues. The weekly's logo, a pair of hands extended in greeting from the shore of Cyprus to the shore of Palestine, is decorated, on the release issue, with an illustration of a ship sailing for Palestine.
"As the Nazis were there - in the extermination camps in Transnistria, so the British are here - in the detention camps, where they wish to push us to despair… but they cannot… the air of Palestine is too close here, and it won't allow it" (Hebrew, from issue 21).
8-30 pp per issue (some are double issues), 31.5 cm. Bound with metal clip. Fair condition. Stains, mostly to last issue. Stamps. Filing holes. Tears to page margins. Worming.
Provenance: Shlomo Shva collection.
