Lot: 'Shylock' - The Merchant of Venice. Germany and England, 1800-1860
Two painted porcelain figures of Shylock - The Merchant of Venice, from William Shakespeare's 16th century famous play.
Shylock's figure has been interpreted in various ways. On the one hand, it represents the anti-Semitic stereotype from the darkness of the Middle Ages of the miserly moneylending Jew; on the other, it is a human figure whose suffering, pain and demand for revenge are introduced with understanding.
Provenance: The Bloch Family Collection, Melbourne-Australia.
