Wandering Jewish Musician - Wooden Figurine, Germany ca. 1900
Figurine of a musician inspired by the Wandering Jew.
The Wandering or Eternal Jew is the name of an anti-Semitic figure from a Christian folktale.
In the Middle Ages, the legend about the Wandering Jew began to spread. In most versions of the tale, the Wandering Jew was a shoemaker wandering endlessly from place to place, conveying instability and prosperity.
The wooden carved figurine was designed as a pedestal. Apparently made in Western Europe in the early 20th century.
Provenance: The Bloch Family Collection, Melbourne-Australia.
Measurement: | 9 x 22 cm |
