Exceptionally fine oil on panel representing Abigail before King David, in the manner of Frans Floris (Antwerp, 1519/1520 – 1570), Flemish school of the 17th century
Oil on board, measurements: 127 x 97 cm. Frans de Vriendt, known as Frans Floris, was born into a family with a tradition of craftsmen. His father, Cornelis, practiced the profession of stonemason in which he achieved great popularity. The aspirations of the father of the family to integrate into the intellectual environment of the Antwerp of that time meant the adoption of the name "Floris" to embellish his surname. It would be with his brother Cornelis that he has been most associated in artistic historiography due to his joint participation in certain ecclesiastical commissions. Frans very possibly trained alongside Pieter Coecke van Aelst and Lambert Lombard, a teacher with whom he must have acquired knowledge and theoretical knowledge that raised his artistic and intellectual prestige.
