Herzl - The New Ghetto - First and Rare Edition - Warsaw 1898
The new ghetto, Das Neue Ghetto. by Theodor Herzl.
A four-act play translated from Ashkenazi into Hebrew with a special license from the author by Reuben Brainin.
Published by the "Ahiasaf" company, Warsaw, 1898.
A play written by Herzl that was published when Herzl was still a playwright and journalist in Vienna. It was written under the influence of the Dreyfus trial that Herzl covered as a journalist, and deals with an assimilated Jew who seeks to get out of the social ghetto he is in, and finally dies in a duel with an anti-Semitic nobleman who insulted his honor. The play serves as an allegory for the situation of the Jews. First printed in German ("Ashkenazit") in Die Welt.
Hebrew, 63 pp., 18X12 cm. good-reasonable condition: many rust spots throughout the book, library stamps.
